Official welcome to our two new graduate students, Sarah
Chachula
(from George
Washington
University)
and Ryan
Tipker
(from
Allegheny

Having two
Sarahs has
created a
little
confusion, but
one will
graduate
soon.

¶ Oxidative
addition of
methylene
chloride? We
did that with
Me-DuPhos
complexes of
Pd (Natalia),
or Rh (Perry

Sarah).
Our latest
paper is now
out here
for the Malcolm
Green
special issue
of Inorganica
Chimica Acta.
Patience is a
virtue...check
out the NMR
spectra in the
SI with
Natalia's
handwritten
notes from...

Let's hope we
can improve on
this timing in
the future.
¶ We enjoyed
visits from
Meaghan Deegan
'14 (almost
done with her
Ph.D. at
CalTech) and
Tim Chapp
Ph.D. '10
(assistant
professor at
Allegheny
College).
Here's the

Note the
kaleidoscopic

¶ The end of an
era. We miss
you already,
Jake.

¶
Congratulations
to Dr. Jake
Muldoon, group
Ph.D.
#16.
This finally
completes the
comeback for
men, and the
score is now
tied at
8. Soon,
Jake is going
to China Lake,
for his
postdoc at the
Naval
Air Weapons
Station.

Dan Pham '16
visited from
Boston for
Jake's talk.
¶ Passing the
torch: new
student Ryan
is learning
everything
from Dr. Jake.
¶ Congratulations
to Meaghan
Deegan '14 for
another
CalTech paper,
this one from
Chem. Sci.

§ Our
latest Organometallics paper is out here.
Zhiming made the pincer ligand, plus
iridium and nickel complexes, and Sarah studied
nickel-catalyzed asymmetric phosphination.

Thanks as usual to Arnie and Russ for X-ray
and computational work.

§ Summer term: welcome to new graduate student Ryan Tipker (Allegheny College). Both Lauren and Amber are here, thanks to the department's summer research fellowships, and Sarah is at the Gordon Conference on Organometallic Chemistry in Newport, Rhode Island (photo below). Meanwhile, Jake completed his thesis and is almost done with the Ph.D.

More
congratulations:
• Lauren
received a Lemal Fellowship
for summer
research.
• Dr. Liz Lane

has completed
her Ph.D. from

Next stop, a
postdoc with Christine Thomas at Ohio

Another Organometallics
paper! Thanks to Meaghan, Jake and Russ
(#EDA-NOCV) Hughes. Now we know more about the ligand
properties of phosphiranes, both experimentally and
computationally. Compared to phosphines, they're
weaker sigma-donors (as reported earlier), and similar
pi-acceptors (NOT as good as hyped earlier).

• Lab renovations
complete!
We have
beautiful new
fume hoods,
bigger and
better (and,
at least for a
while,
cleaner) than
the older
versions.
• Congratulations to Amber, who received a departmental Zabriskie fellowship to support her research over the summer.
• Congratulations
to Lauren, who
was selected
for the 2018
Inorganic

at the Fall
ACS National

March 2018
Congratulations to Jake and many more patient coauthors. Our phosphirane paper has been published in Angewandte Chemie here!
After the first discovery by Tim
Chapp, Balazs
Varga developed a practical
synthesis. Meaghan
Deegan showed it was highly
enantioselective. More recently Jake
Muldoon, with help from Adam
Eordogh,
figured out the stereochemistry of phosphirane
formation,
inspired by
provocative computational
predictions
from Russ Hughes.
Finally, X-ray
crystallography
from Arnie
Rheingold
and Curtis
Moore
at UCSD
established
the structures
and
P-configurations.
We're
excited.
Why?
You learn
about the
stereochemistry
of
nucleophilic
substitution
*at the
electrophile*
for the SN1
and SN2
reactions.
But what about
the
nucleophile?
That's usually
ignored, since
it's not
chiral.
However,
phosphines act
as
nucleophiles
with retention
of
configuration.
Here's the
standard
picture.

December 2017
• Lab renovations
under way:
brand new fume
hoods are
being
installed.
• Dr. Zhiming
has returned
to China for
his new job at
Xiling Lab
•
Congratulations
to Lauren, who
received a
Hellman Family
Foundation
grant from Dartmouth Undergraduate
Research
to support her
winter term
research.
• Thanks to
Adam for

his new home
at ETH-Zurich.

• Sarah's first
Dartmouth paper has
been published
in Inorganic

Cu(diphos*)(X)
sounds simple,

3-coordinate

halides and
chelate and/or
bridging
bis(phosphines).
